New York Car Insurance Minimum Requirements
What New York law requires you to carry, and what your insurer must offer you on top of it.

Every New York policy must include uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage at the same 25/50 minimums — it cannot be rejected. Supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorists (SUM) coverage is separate and optional, but the insurer must offer it.
- Personal injury protection (PIP)
- Required (No-Fault / PIP)
New York is a no-fault state. Every owner's policy issued to satisfy Vehicle & Traffic Law article 6 must provide first party (no-fault) benefits. It cannot be rejected.
- PIP minimum limit
- $50,000
"Basic economic loss" is up to $50,000 per person — medical and related expenses, lost earnings up to $2,000 a month for three years, and other reasonable expenses up to $25 a day for one year.
