What Happens If Your Car Insurance Lapses in New York
A lapse is not only a gap in protection. In most states it is a reportable event with its own penalties.
- If you are under an SR-22
- Not applicable
New York has no SR-22 class of drivers. Every registered vehicle is monitored the same way — the insurer files a notice of termination with DMV within 30 days, and DMV suspends the registration and the driver license.
- Reinstatement fee
- $50
$50 license suspension termination fee. For a lapse of 90 days or less you may also choose to pay the per-day civil penalty ($8/$10/$12 by tier) instead of surrendering your plates — but not if you used that option in the previous 36 months.
- Proof at a traffic stop
- Required
A driver must produce a New York insurance identification card on request by a police officer or magistrate. Failure to produce one is presumptive evidence of operating without the required financial security.
