About
This is a reference for what US states require of drivers: liability minimums, SR-22 rules, penalties for driving uninsured, fault systems, lapse consequences, new-resident deadlines and crash reporting duties.
One page per state
Most guides organise by topic โ one page holding a fifty-row table, of which you read a single line. We organise by state, because that is how the question actually arrives. If you live in Texas, you want the Texas answers together.
Every figure is cited
Each fact links to the state agency page or statute it came from, with the date we last checked it. A figure with no source does not get published. This is slower than estimating, and it is the point.
Premium data
Average premium figures come from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' Auto Insurance Database Average Premium Supplement โ the averages insurers actually reported to regulators, not modelled quotes. The NAIC publishes annually, so the most recent year lags the calendar by roughly eighteen months.
What this is not
This is not legal advice, insurance advice, or a quote engine. We do not sell policies and we do not collect your details to pass to anyone who does. Before you act on anything here, confirm it with your state's department of insurance or motor vehicles โ every state page links to them directly.
Corrections
Law changes and we will sometimes be behind it. Each state page carries a change history showing what moved and when. If you find something out of date, we would rather hear it.
