Penalties for Driving Without Insurance in Ohio
What actually happens when you are caught driving without liability coverage in Ohio.

A first violation draws a class F suspension, which runs until you file proof and pay the fee. A second within one year is a class C suspension (one year); a third or later within one year is a class B suspension (two years). Until April 9, 2025 the repeat-offense lookback was five years, not one.

The registrar impounds the license itself. Registration suspension and license-plate impoundment were dropped from the no-insurance penalty on April 9, 2025. A court can still order vehicle immobilization for driving while under a financial-responsibility suspension.

Ohio has no annual surcharge program. The separate $50 financial responsibility nonvoluntary compliance fee — charged when a driver did not voluntarily surrender the license or plates — was repealed on April 9, 2025.

Repeat-offense lookback cut to one year; plate impoundment and the $50 compliance fee dropped
H.B. 29 of the 135th General Assembly narrowed the repeat-offense window in ORC 4509.101(A)(2) from five years to one year, so a second no-insurance suspension only escalates to a one-year suspension if it lands within twelve months of the first. The same act deleted division (A)(2)(d), which had suspended the owner's registration and impounded the certificate of registration and license plates, and removed the $50 financial responsibility nonvoluntary compliance fee. It also extended the grace period for producing proof after a ticket from fifteen days to forty-five days.

First-offense reinstatement fee cut from $100 to $40
H.B. 33 of the 135th General Assembly lowered the financial responsibility reinstatement fee for a first violation of ORC 4509.101(A)(1) from $100 to $40. The second-offense ($300) and third-or-later ($600) fees were left alone. Sites that still list $100 / $300 / $600 are quoting the pre-October 2023 schedule.
