Maryland Crash Reporting Requirements

Maryland sets no dollar threshold for reporting a crash. Deadline to file: 15 days. Submit to: Maryland MVA.

Damage threshold
No dollar threshold

Maryland does not use a damage figure. The written report duty applies only to crashes that injure or kill someone. In a property-damage-only crash you must stop and exchange information, and leave a note on an unattended vehicle, but no report is required.

Deadline to file
15 days

Within 15 days of the crash, together with evidence of your liability insurance (insurer, policy number and local producer).

Submit to
Maryland MVA

Each driver reports in writing to the MVA. No driver report is needed if a police officer investigated and filed a report with the Maryland State Police. Failing to file can cost you your license and every registration you hold.

How Maryland compares with every other state

What this means after a crash

Maryland does not use a dollar figure at all, which trips up drivers who have moved from a state that does. There is no repair estimate to compare against. What matters is the kind of crash — injury, death, a vehicle towed away — and the table above is the whole test.

You have 15 days. 35 of the 43 with a day count give you less time, 5 give you more. The clock runs from the crash, not from the insurance claim or the repair estimate, and it keeps running while you wait to hear whether the police filed a report of their own.

Who receives it matters as much as when. In Maryland the report goes to Maryland MVA. An officer writing a report at the scene is not automatically the report the state is waiting for — where the two are separate, the table above says who receives yours.
