If you are under an SR-22
Suspension reinstated

A lapse during the 180-day stay lifts the stay and the suspension comes back (IC 9-25-6-3(h)). For a three-year court-related requirement, failing to maintain proof suspends you again until new proof is filed (IC 9-30-6-12(d)).

Reinstatement fee
$250

$250 first suspension, $500 second, $1,000 third or later (IC 9-25-6-15(b)). Not owed if the suspension is terminated by keeping an SR22 for the full 180 days.

Proof at a traffic stop
Paper or electronic proof when an officer asks→ Paper, electronic, or checked by the officer online from January 1, 2028

Proof requested by a law enforcement officer must be in effect on that date and may be shown on paper or as an image on a phone (IC 9-25-4-7(b)). Insurance details you give an officer are not sent to the BMV; the BMV asks for a Certificate of Compliance separately after crashes and certain convictions.

How Indiana compares with every other state

How a lapse plays out

A gap in coverage is cheap to create and expensive to close. Nothing below depends on causing a crash or being pulled over: these are what Indiana asks for once the gap exists, and the table above is where each figure comes from.

Clearing it costs $250 here, on top of the premium you stopped paying. Only 1 of the 47 we have a figure for charge more. The fee is charged for the administrative act of restoring you, so it is owed whether the lapse lasted a month or a day.

If you are already under a filing requirement, a lapse is a different animal: suspension reinstated. That is the trap in letting a policy auto-cancel for non-payment: the certificate is filed with the state, so it ends where the policy ends.

And proof at the roadside is its own requirement, separate from having the coverage: paper or electronic proof when an officer asks in Indiana. Being insured and being able to show it are two different tests, and drivers fail the second one with a live policy in force.
