Moving to Washington: Insurance, Registration and License Deadlines
Moving to Washington? Register your vehicle and switch your driver license within 30 days.
- Vehicle registration deadline
- 30 days
New residents have 30 days from becoming residents to register their vehicles (RCW 46.16A.140(4)). DOL requires the Washington driver license first.
- Driver license deadline
- 30 days
New residents must get a Washington driver license within 30 days (RCW 46.20.021(1)).
- Emissions inspection
- Not required
Washington's emission check program ended January 1, 2020. Vehicles no longer need an emissions test before registration renewal.
- Handled by separate agencies
- No
The Department of Licensing handles both, but driver licensing and vehicle licensing are done at separate office locations, so plan on two trips.
Washington allows 30 days — higher than 11 of the 51 jurisdictions on this site. The range runs from no grace period at all to 90 days.
What trips people up
You have 30 days to register the car. Only 11 of the 51 jurisdictions here give you less. The number matters less than where the count starts: these clocks run from the day you become a resident, which is rarely the day you decide to deal with paperwork. People lose the window while waiting on a lease, a title from a lender, or an appointment that was not available in time.

What changed
January 1, 2020
Vehicle emission check program ended
After 38 years, Washington's emission check program ended January 1, 2020, following a phase-out the Legislature began in 2005. Vehicle owners no longer need an emissions test before renewing registration. Driving a vehicle with modified emissions equipment, or one that smokes, is still illegal.

Why the rule looks like this
- What Changed in 2026Liability minimums doubled in Hawaii, two states dropped pure comparative fault, New Hampshire stopped inspecting cars, and three crash reporting thresholds moved — a dated account of the 2026 changes, and the ones already signed for 2027 and beyond.
- When a State Contradicts ItselfA state's statute and that same state's own agency page often give different answers on the same day. Seven cases we hit reading all 51 jurisdictions, why it happens, and where the agency is the one that's right.
- Two Deadlines, and Sometimes Two AgenciesA new resident usually gets one deadline for the car and another for the license — 20 days apart in Florida, 60 in Texas, and no grace period for either in Michigan, Arizona or Massachusetts.
