Iowa SR-22 Insurance: Who Needs a Filing and for How Long
Yes — Iowa uses the SR-22. How long it stays on file: 2 years.
- Used in this state
- Yes
- Form
- SR-22
The statute says "proof of financial responsibility"; the Iowa DOT takes it on the SR-22 (AAMVA Uniform Financial Responsibility Form), filed by an Iowa-authorized insurer. An employer's fleet insurer files an SR-23 instead. The DOT's page also offers a bond or deposit in place of a filing; the statutes put a surety bond at the 20/40/15 limits (§ 321A.24) and a certificate of deposit from an Iowa financial institution at $55,000 (§ 321A.25).
- How long it must stay on file
- 2 years
Proof is required from the first day of the suspension or revocation and must stay on file for two years. The DOT will release it earlier only on death, permanent incapacity, or surrender of the license and registration (Iowa Code § 321A.29).
- What triggers it
- Any license suspension or revocation the DOT enters on a record of conviction, including an OWI revocation under chapter 321J · Not depositing security after an uninsured crash that caused injury, death, or $1,500 or more of property damage · An unpaid judgment arising from a motor vehicle crash · Being convicted of an offense that would require suspension when you hold no license at all
Iowa Code § 321A.17 carves out several suspensions that do not require proof — among them certain juvenile dispositional orders, minors' license suspensions, a rescinded administrative suspension or revocation, and a commercial-driver disqualification that leaves the underlying license valid.
- If coverage lapses
- License and all registrations suspended
Letting the proof lapse during the two-year period suspends the driving privilege and every vehicle registration in your name until new proof is filed. Since 2023 a county treasurer must still issue or transfer the registration, but it is suspended the moment it is issued (Iowa Code §§ 321A.17(2), 321A.17(10)).
- Reinstatement fee
- $20
$20 to reinstate the driver's license (Iowa Code § 321.191(8)). The DOT charges a further $10 for the duplicate license issued at the counter. If you have gone more than a year without a valid license you must also pass the knowledge and drive tests again.
Iowa requires 2 years — higher than 7 of the 37 jurisdictions on this site. The range runs from 1 year to 3 years.
How Iowa compares with every other state
Why the rule looks like this
- What Changed in 2026Liability minimums doubled in Hawaii, two states dropped pure comparative fault, New Hampshire stopped inspecting cars, and three crash reporting thresholds moved — a dated account of the 2026 changes, and the ones already signed for 2027 and beyond.
- The Fine Is the Cheapest PartA first-offense fine for driving uninsured runs from $30 in Florida to a $1,500 floor in Delaware — but South Carolina's $100 fine arrives with a $700 reinstatement fee, and the reinstatement is usually the bigger number.
- The Form Some States Do Not UseAn SR-22 is a certificate, not a policy — and in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina and Michigan the form does not exist at all.
