Idaho Crash Reporting Requirements
In Idaho, the crash reporting threshold is $1,500 in damage. Submit to: Local police, the county sheriff or the nearest Idaho State Police office — immediately, and no form afterwards.

Notice is owed when a crash injures or kills anyone, or when apparent damage to the property of any one person is more than $1,500. The test is per person, not per crash, so a three-car collision is measured against each owner separately. Idaho has never indexed the figure — it has stood at $1,500 since 2005, which by now catches almost any body-panel repair.

Two things surprise people here. First, the timing is not a deadline in days: you must give notice "immediately, by the quickest means of communication available", to the local police department if the crash was inside a city and otherwise to the county sheriff or the nearest Idaho State Police office, and if you are physically unable to call, another occupant who can must do it for you. Second, Idaho puts no written report on the driver at all. Section 49-1306 makes the investigating law enforcement officer file the written report with the department within 24 hours of finishing the investigation; there is no counterpart form for you to mail in, which is why Idaho has no equivalent of a Texas CR-2. Leaving the scene without stopping and meeting the duties in §§ 49-1301 through 49-1304 is a separate misdemeanor and revokes the license for a year. A city may add its own reporting ordinance on top under § 49-1313.
Idaho sets $1,500 — higher than 28 of the 44 jurisdictions on this site. The range runs from $250 to $4,000.
How Idaho compares with every other state
What this means after a crash
$1,500 is the number to keep in mind, and it is a damage figure rather than an injury one: a crash with no one hurt still has to be reported once the damage reaches it. Only 12 of the 44 that set a dollar figure start higher. Note what the threshold is measured against — apparent damage at the scene, not the final repair invoice — so the call has to be made before anyone has priced anything.
Who receives it matters as much as when. In Idaho the report goes to Local police, the county sheriff or the nearest Idaho State Police office — immediately, and no form afterwards. An officer writing a report at the scene is not automatically the report the state is waiting for — where the two are separate, the table above says who receives yours.
Why the rule looks like this
- What Changed in 2026Liability minimums doubled in Hawaii, two states dropped pure comparative fault, New Hampshire stopped inspecting cars, and three crash reporting thresholds moved — a dated account of the 2026 changes, and the ones already signed for 2027 and beyond.
- The Crash You Are Required to Report Is Smaller Than You ThinkCrash-report triggers start at $500 in Georgia and New Jersey and reach $3,000 for a Virginia police report; Florida's is $500 before 1 October 2026 and $2,000 from that date, and Pennsylvania and Maryland use no dollar figure at all.
