If you are under an SR-22
Suspended 20 days after the SR-26 notice

A lapse only has consequences for the drivers the state has ordered to file proof. When their insurer files an SR-26, the commissioner sends a notice and suspends the license and registration 20 days later unless a replacement SR-22 is on file. Everyone else can let a policy lapse without notifying the state, because New Hampshire never required the policy in the first place.

Reinstatement fee
$100

$100 to restore a driver license, or $50 where the suspension was of an original or youth operator's license under RSA 263:14. If a non-owner (operator) SR-22 is what you filed, your vehicle registration stays suspended until owner coverage is filed for the vehicle. Restoring a suspended registration is a separate $25.

Proof at a traffic stop
License and registration only

New Hampshire law requires you to carry your driver license and the vehicle's certificate of registration and hand them over on demand. There is no statute requiring an insurance card, because there is no general duty to be insured. After a crash you must give the other driver your insurer and policy information "if applicable" (RSA 264:25, I).

How New Hampshire compares with every other state

How a lapse plays out

A gap in coverage is cheap to create and expensive to close. Nothing below depends on causing a crash or being pulled over: these are what New Hampshire asks for once the gap exists, and the table above is where each figure comes from.

Clearing it costs $100 here, on top of the premium you stopped paying. Only 9 of the 47 we have a figure for charge more. The fee is charged for the administrative act of restoring you, so it is owed whether the lapse lasted a month or a day.

If you are already under a filing requirement, a lapse is a different animal: suspended 20 days after the SR-26 notice. That is the trap in letting a policy auto-cancel for non-payment: the certificate is filed with the state, so it ends where the policy ends.

And proof at the roadside is its own requirement, separate from having the coverage: license and registration only in New Hampshire. Being insured and being able to show it are two different tests, and drivers fail the second one with a live policy in force.
